A Financial Advisor You Can Rely On
Our Story
I started JTM Williams Capital Management because I got tired of watching good people get sold products instead of given advice.
I’m Matt Williams, and I’ve spent my entire career in finance, but I didn’t start out on the advice side. I began as a hedge fund trader and portfolio manager, which means I learned the markets from the inside, managing real money under real pressure, long before I ever sat across the table from a client. That background shapes how I plan today. I’m not guessing at how markets behave. I’ve traded through the ups and downs myself.
I graduated from West Virginia University in 2006 with a B.S.B.A. in Finance and later served as Director of Trading for Capital Guardian/Capital L Wealth Management, a boutique asset management firm in the Carolinas. From 2015 to 2023, I worked with Ameriprise Financial Services, building a career helping individuals and families make sense of their money.
Over time, I wanted to offer something more independent, so I founded JTM Williams Capital Management as a fee-only fiduciary firm. That means I don’t earn commissions, I don’t sell products, and I’m legally bound to act in your best interest, not mine.
Today, I hold the CFP®, CRPC®, and APMA® designations, and I work with professionals, business owners, retirees, and pre-retirees who want a straightforward plan and someone who will tell them the truth, not just what sounds good.
Outside the office, I live in Alexandria, Virginia, with my wife, Elise, and our son, Julian. When I’m not working with clients, you’ll usually find me lifting weights, enjoying the outdoors, or watching West Virginia University sports. Win or lose, I’m still watching.
Who I Work With
• Professionals building wealth during their highest-earning years who want a coordinated plan for investments, taxes, and long-term goals
• Business owners who need help separating personal and business finances, planning for succession, and preparing for what comes after the business
• Retirees and pre-retirees who want to know their savings will support the retirement they’ve pictured, with a clear income and tax strategy
If that sounds like you, let’s talk. The first call is free, and there’s no pressure to become a client.

Why Clients Work With Me
As a fee-only fiduciary, my income doesn't change based on which products or investments I recommend. That's not a marketing line, it's a legal and structural fact about how this firm operates. If an idea isn't right for you, I have no incentive to talk you into it.
Before I ever built a financial plan for a client, I traded and managed portfolios for a living. I understand risk, market cycles, and what it actually feels like to make decisions when money is on the line.
Whether you're a business owner thinking about succession, a professional building wealth in your peak earning years, or a retiree trying to make your savings last, your situation gets a plan built for it, not a generic one pulled off a shelf.
I believe most people don't want more financial jargon. They want a clear answer to "am I going to be okay," explained in plain English, with a real person who picks up the phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
It means I'm paid only by my clients, never by commissions, product sales, or referral fees from investment companies. I'm also legally required to act in your best interest at all times. Most people are surprised to learn that not all financial advisors are held to this standard. I am.
Every relationship starts with a complimentary 15- minute call to understand your situation and see if we're a good fit. If we move forward, I'll walk you through exactly how fees work before you commit to anything. There's never a surprise bill.
Not necessarily. I work with professionals, business owners, and retirees at different stages of building and protecting wealth. The best way to find out if I can help is to have a conversation, not to guess based on a number.
We talk. I ask about your situation, your goals, and what's on your mind financially. You ask me anything you want about how I work, my background, or my approach. There's no sales pitch and no obligation. It's a chance for both of us to see if working together makes sense.
Those are my two office locations, but I also work with clients remotely by video call. If you'd rather meet in person, I have offices in both Alexandria, VA and Bridgeport, WV.
You get me. Not a call center, not a rotating advisor, not a junior associate. I combine hands-on portfolio management experience with independent, fee-only advice, backed by the research and resources of a national partner firm, so you get the best of both without losing the personal relationship.
Retirement income planning, investment strategy, tax and estate planning, succession planning for business owners, and risk management and insurance planning. You can learn more about each area on my Services page.
